The Analytical Distance Runner is the newsletter for the Association of Road Racing
Statisticians with a focus on races, 3000m and longer, including road, track,
and crosscountry events. Male runners who have achieved a sub-30:00 time for 10K road
or the equivalent, and female runners who have achieved a sub-35:00 time for 10K road
or the equivalent are tracked. These criteria include virtually all world and national
class open runners and many top masters runners.

10 Years Ago- Josephat Kiprono (KEN) won the IAAF Rome Millennium (ITA) Marathon in 2:08:27 with
Italians Giacomo Leone and Francesco Ingargiola also under 2:09 with 2:08:41 and
2:08:49 respectively. Tegla Loroupe (KEN) led an East African 1-2-3 sweep with
a 2:32:04. Gadisse Edato (ETH) was next in 2:32:11 and Hellen Kimutai (KEN) was
3rd in 2:33:47.
20 Years Ago- Paul Cuskin (ENG) won the 76th edition of the Morpeth-Newcastle (ENG) 22.7K with a
1:09:14, holding a 3 second margin over Paul Evans (ENG). Stephen Brace (WAL) was
3rd in 1:09:23. Veronique Marot (ENG) won the women’s race in 1:20:08 over Anne
vanSchuppen (NED) in 2nd with 1:25:25. This race was shortened to a half marathon
in 2002 and held its 90th and last running in 2004 (at least as far as known to ADR).
30 Years Ago- Dick Quax (NZL) won the Runner’s World Invitational (CA/USA) 15K in 43:01.7. Martti
Kiilholma (FIN) was 2nd in 43:55 and Robert Hodge (USA) was 3rd in 44:00.2.
40 Years Ago- Kerry Pearce (AUS) ran 8:39.4 to win an indoor two mile in San Francisco CA/USA.
50 Years Ago- Robert Bagg (AUS) defeated David Power (AUS), 29:12.6 to 30:08 over 10,000m in Sydney AUS.
60 Years Ago- Viljo Heino (FIN) won the Round the Houses (BRA) 7.3K in 22:45. This race is now known as
the Sao Silvestre and the distance has been extended over the years to its present-day 15 km.

This race has an estimated RTB of -4.1 sec/km which, in itself, is not sufficient reason for rejection.
The race is held at altitude and numerous “unknown” runners ran times two to three minutes faster than
the ARRS qualifying standards. It is highly likely this course was short. Performances from this race
are excluded from ARRS records/rankings lists. The women’s 15K course appears to have been reasonably
accurate.

CURRENT WIN STREAKS
Details of current win streaks are posted on the ARRS website. Win streaks are based on race results
reported to ADR. Only 5-streaks and longer are listed. Numbers in each heading represent the number
of current win streaks in the list. Numbers preceeding the runner’s name indicate the length of their
current win streak. An “x” followed by a number indicates the length of the win streak that was broken.
MEN (8)
(7) Ezekiel Meli Kiprotich (KEN) now has seven wins credited to him, thanks to Franco Civai and others
for their help in getting Kiprotich performances distinguished from Ezekiel Meli Kipkemboi performances.
(5) Zsolt Benedek (HUN) placed 6th in a road 10K on October 10th but came back the next day to win a 5K and
has won four times since then with no losses, giving him a listing.
(5) Haile Gebreselasie (ETH) has another 5-streak, marking the 7th time in his career (as known to ADR)
that he has achieved at least 5 straight wins. His longest win streak is 44, stretching from 05 Oct 1996
thru 25 Sep 2000 (losses on 14 Aug 1996 and 08 Aug 2001 brackett his 44-streak).
(5) Daniel Gitau (KEN) gains a listing based on two track wins followed by three relay leg fastest times
(that count as wins), all in Japan.
WOMEN (8)
(8) Jeong-Sook Lee (KOR) moves to the top of the women’s list with marathon wins on back-to-back
weekends. All of her wins have been marathons and all are since late April.
(x5) Asmae Ghizlane (MAR) broke her 5-streak when she finished 2nd at the Trofeo Fisiosport (ITA) 10.5K
but came back the following week with another win.
(5) Agnes Kiprop (KEN) is primarily a marathoner with her last known (to ADR) loss back in August of 2006
at 8.4K. Since then, she has raced longer distances and won three marathons in compiling her 5-streak.
(5) Petra Maak (GER) is age 45 but still winning races, five straight since last April. That earns her a
listing on the ARRS website.

VETERAN RANKINGS UPDATES
All of the posted all-time veterans rankings web pages have been updated. Note that, as always, many veterans
performances will be accumulated in the database and will be incorporated into the all-time lists at the
end of the calendar year. Exceptions are made for new age group records in which case, the affected web
page would be updated with all relevant performances accumulated since the last update.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
The annual update is complete except for the rankings of races by competitive level. This update is done
after the year end race results have been processed so that these lists for last year can be as complete
as possible since they will not be updated again.
The tables of quality performances (QPs) by year (found under Yearly Rankings Leaders) indicate relative
competitive activity for different events. New records for QPs were set in 2009 for the following:

The following events posted their second highest QP-score: 20K men, marathon women, indoor track 3000m men
and women.
The record progressions have been extensively updated and in particular, the marathon record progressions. This
is a side-effect of the project to post deep marathon rankings for each year (now back to 1934). Thus, the
men’s marathon record progressions have been extended back into the 1930’s for most of the countries
posted on the ARRS website. As Andy Milroy and crew work their way further into the past, these record
progressions will continue to be extended back in time.
Record progressions have also been added for BUL, CRO, CUB, ECU, MDA, PER, and ZIM. These countries were added
to the list of countries tracked in the weekly competitive rankings and the various event rankings lists
posted on the ARRS website.
The life-time prize money list has been updated.

META ANALYSES
The section under “Database Statistics” not only provides a summary of the information in the database, it also
provides insight into how the sport has evolved over time. One section that I particularly like is the one
showing the numbers of performances for the various standard road distances. For example, at present,
the three most popular road events are the marathon, half marathon, and 10K (in that order). However,
30 years ago, the pattern was rather different. The marathon was still the most popular event but the
10K was second and the 10 mile was third. Forty years ago, it was the marathon, 25K, and 10 mile
(in that order). Forty years ago, the 25K was a common national championship distance. Over time,
the 25K has been replaced by the half marathon.
Another section details the numbers of runners in the database by nationality. There are actually two tables
of runners in the database. The primary table is the one with the runners who have achieved one or more
of the ARRS qualifying marks. Once in the primary table, all performances by these runners qualify for
the database. They also are entered in the head-to-head, competitive rankings that appear in ADR each
week. The secondary table contains those runners who have not achieved an open qualifying standard but
who have (a) won a marathon, (b) won a prize purse of US$1000 or more, and/or (c) achieved one or more of
the veteran’s qualifying standards.
There are presently 31,151 runners in the primary table (up from 28,342 at the end of 2008) and 22,734 runners
in the secondary table (up from 16,529). For the first time ever, the country with the most runners in
the primary table is NOT the USA. Japan has edged into the top spot with 5308 runners compared to 5297
for the USA. KEN, GBR, RUS, GER, FRA, ITA, RSA, and ETH round out the top ten.
The total number of performances in the database increased from 647,386 at the end of 2008 to 720,384 at the
end of 2009. This is an increase of 72,998 or an average of close to 200 performances added to the database
every day. Major countries showing substantial increases in race results are JPN, GER, ITA, SUI, CZE, AUT,
and SER. These reflect ARRS members who have recently begin to contribute heavily from these countries.
Many results are also received from countries such as France and Great Britain but these have been well
covered for several years, i.e., they do not show a substantial increase.
The number of performance in the database by year has remained remarkably constant over the past six years,
ranging from a high (2004) of 40,384 to a low of 38,669 (2009). The numbers for 2009 do not reflect many
of the year-end races and so this number should be closer to 39,000 when the year-end races are included
(next year).

MARATHON LISTS AND RANKINGS UPDATES
ALL of the lists of marathons have been updated as of the end of 2009. Thanks to having this section almost
fully automated, the update for 76 years of marathon lists was completed in about three hours. The numbers
of marathons and numbers of documented finishers reached new records in 2009 with a total (so far) of 2208
races and 1,308,410 finishers. There are still roughly 160 marathons that were scheduled but which have
not yet been verified and probably an equal number of marathons that have not been reported at all. Hence,
the total number of marathons world-wide is probably close to 2500.
Many of these marathons are “micro” marathons, put on by local groups without entry fees, T-shirts, and such.
The 100 Marathon Club in Hamburg GER puts on roughly 50 such marathons a year with the numbers of finishers
rarely as many as ten. Similar groups put on many micro marathons in Berlin GER, Finland, Slovakia, and Norway
and probably such groups exists elsewhere.
Please check the supplementary list of marathons that have been excluded from the main list. The link is at the
bottom of the list of marathons. There are four sections to this supplementary list; (1) marathons that were
scheduled and are not yet verified, (2) marathons that were cancelled, (3) marathons that are not races
(no times or places recorded), and (4) marathons that are not marathons, i.e., the race distance was something
other than a marathon but the race was called a marathon. It would be nice to reduce the numbers of marathons
that were scheduled but not yet verified.
There are also lists posted of the largest marathons (in terms of finishers) for each year and various statistics
on marathons, e.g., number of marathon races by country, number of finishers by country, etc.

FILLING IN RACE HISTORIES
There are more than 1000 race histories posted on the ARRS website. Many of these are incomplete, missing
race dates and/or winners. Each week, ARRS members send in additions and corrections to these race histories.
Altho each contribution is acknowledged on the particular web page that individual has contributed to, these
contributions are generally unseen. This section is intended to emphasize the importance of these contributions
and to encourage others to help fill in missing information. Points are awarded for each addition or
significant correction to an existing entry in the table of race dates and winners for any of the posted race
histories or posted national champions. A maximum of 50 points for any one race history or champions page will
be awarded to any one individual. One point is awarded for a veteran’s performance that makes the rankings
as well as for filling in any missing dates of birth. Two points are awarded for a marathon added to the list
of marathons for any year. The full two points is awarded only if ALL listed information is present
(date, venue, race name, # finishers, # runnings, male/female winners and their times). Partial information
is prorated.

COMPETITIVE LEVEL OF RACES
The competitive level of races is based on the current point levels of the top five ranked
runners in the race. This is compared to the average point level of the top ten ranked
world and then scaled on a scale of 0 to 1000 altho it is possible with the scaling system
being used, to exceed the 1000 point level.

be evident, taking three of the top ten spots for both men and women.
